An SMC reset on a Mac essentially resets the one resetting hardware level, low power functions such as battery and power management, cooling fans, LED indicator lights, sleep and wake behavior, as well as thermal management. In case a Mac does not react to pressing the power button, the fans run at maximum speed without any obvious reason, the battery cannot be charged properly, or generally, hardware exhibits functional problems, System Management Controller resetting could be the answer. Basically, on most Intel MacBooks (pre-M chip), you first turn the device off, then press and hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for approximately 10 seconds, after which you release the keys and turn the Mac on again. A desktop Mac is capable of resetting the SMC just by unplugging the power for around 15 seconds and then plugging it back in.
